PERSONAL DETAILS
DESCRIPTION:
Vanessa is a beauty, plain and simple. Soft curves of supple skin and muscle are just the foundation of this woman. Her skin is a light white which shows no sign of a blemish or wrinkle. Her spindly golden hair is folded and pinned up, much like Riza Hawkeye (who she is an avid fan of). Her eyes are a crystal blue and her nose is small, like a button. Her torso is very muscular, complete with a set of visible abdominal muscles. Her forearms, also rather muscular, lead to her chest, which is only a mid B as best. Her thighs and hips are bold though, luscious almost, making them as attractive as they are very, very painful. She often wears black tank-tops under her Crusader issue jacket, which reaches her mid-stomach. Her lower half is clad in tight fitting white denim, thigh high boots, and a small, skirt like garment. Often time, she wears tighter, form-fitting clothing. Though, this isn't her entire wardrobe, she does have quite a few dresses that she never gets to wear. Her voice is very soft and often times enchanting and alluring. She carries herself like any beautiful woman: owning her curves to look as amazing as possible.
While in Inferis, however, her clothing gets a bit more modest. She wears a set of imaginative, almost fantasy-like, nun's garments, with white and gold trappings upon the skirt and gold outlining around the cloth. While she only wears the cloth in the hellscape, many do refer to her by her nickname "Sister Helsing".
PERSONALITY:
Vanessa's personality is best explained by her most prevalent feature: self-reliance. Vanessa likes to do things HER way, and if she doesn't get to, well, she'll usually do it as long as she get the desired result, but with a big ol' grain of salt. She's normally a very blunt woman, getting straight to the point. She takes care of herself, first and foremost, but moreso her moral compass rather than the physical aspect (Though she tries to keep herself physically okay). If she deems something right, she will do what she wants to support it. If someone needs help who she thinks needs it, she'll do whatever she wants to help. Her moral compass, as it were, is unwavering and rarely takes exceptions to it. A person, demon, ritualist, and so on, isn't completely defined by their group itself. Everyone is judged on their own merits, not on stereotypes. Sure, it may get her in trouble, but good people should be given a pass, right? That's what her family did...that's what God has always wanted right? Her job, in her eyes, isn't the destruction of demons, but rather that of evil. Her famous ancestor, Van Helsing, once said "Evil may have touched this monster, may have created, but it does not RULE it, so I can not kill it." Vanessa's moral compass entirely revolves upon this one sentence.
Her facial expression, usually, is very uninterested, her eyes and lips completely relaxed to almost the point of boredom. Though, this face does morph into different expression, so it's easily malleable. She's very prideful at times for her namesake, trying to give footholds for the Helsing family, past, present, and future. She's determined to do her job to the best of her ability and to live her life to the fullest she can. She has to remain a pillar on any assignment, the one to keep the level head, the one with the plan, the one who can never be caught off guard.
Though outside of work, the decorum comes off and she does as she pleases. From flirting to drinking to just having fun, she's very enjoyable. She's not as controlled as she is normally, but she still has a reign on her emotions, as well as her anger. It prevents her from going too drastic at a bar disagreement. No matter what, she tries to keep herself in check, she must always stay in control, because to be taken advantage of is something she's not fond of. It makes her mad beyond belief and causes her to lose her shit. Anyone that abuses her trust, her hospitality, her help...they are usually met with near-deadly force.
HISTORY:
With a last name like Helsing, Vanessa's story doesn't start with Vanessa. It starts, much further back, with two of her greatest ancestors: Gabriel and Abraham van Helsing. Unlike what most people think, both existed and both were accurately depicted. One, a rough and tumble amnesiac with no memory of his past that vanquished evil with a debatably impossible array of weaponry and the other was a scientist and doctor on the paranormal. After several generations of watching, the Vatican finally found a Helsing child. Little did they know she would be the best of the both of them. She was found, oddly enough, in a wicker basket on the doorstep of St. John's Orphanage in London. Pinned to the blanket the baby was bundled in was a legitimate birth certificate, bearing the full name Vanessa Merila Windgate Helsing. Sister Melissa got word to the Vatican immediately and from there, Vanessa became property of the church.
From there, she travelled and bounced from orphanage to orphanage, boarding school to boarding school. The itchy school uniforms, the strict Sister that made up her teachers...and they way they seemed to single her out. Like, many of the students around her could get away with SO much more than she did, those old, decrepit, half blind eyes were trained on her at all times. Like they expected something. But, her studies weren't the same as other children, oh no, they were far more extensive. They took place in the school's extensive library and went deep into the hours of the night. Endless reading and reading of things she thought were but fairy tale and religious fantasy. But no matter what school she went to, no matter how hard she tried to avoid the class, she was always brought in alone, the only student of these night classes. And every library had those same exact books, right down to the serial numbers. The books were faded, beat up, ancient in both sight and smell. Wherever she went, the books did. But those books didn't belong to her. Hell, she didn't know it, but SHE didn't belong to herself at the time either.
Up through elementary and middle school, Vanessa would always try and sleep in her classes. But those nuns, oooooooooh, those observant nuns popped her with a ruler at the first sign of drooping eyes. She barely got sleep, even on the weekends and holidays. The orphanage insisted that she have physical activity to keep her going, so she was put into school athletic teams. It started with track and field, her dashing skills had become superb. Soon, she began seeing signs...literal signs. Flyers for judo, karate, archery, gymnastics...all of which the sisters thought would be a "great outlet for her potential". Vanessa had no clue what they were talking about, obviously, she was just a normal girl in a normal world. Until she finally learned the truth.
Father Cornelo had appeared at her newest orphanage, this one in the city of Rome. He was a wide, tall, and bald man with a big smile. He was head to toe priest, from the trappings to the decorative jewelry. This was to be her new tutor....and it was a very disquieting change of pace. He seemed less mean, even fatherly, and the most jarring change: he was a man. He brought a new book...still old, but different from those books that seemed to follow her when her back was turned. The book in question was something not published by any existent publishing company and an author she'd never heard of. The book was called "Agents of Notice of the Templar Order". Templars, she thought, had died out looooong ago with the Crusades (which was an exhaustively drawn out subject at her boarding schools). But, as she soon found out, they lasted long after, lasted into the present in fact.
"Page 167, please."
Boom. The words "Van Helsing" across the top in big bold calligraphy. Rough illustrations of her ancestry accompanied by almost a compendium of knowledge on their exploits. Father Cornelo had chosen THIS section specifically. For quite the obvious reason. Then Cornelo started to peel back the layers on top of her teachings, revealing what they were for. The long nights to adapt to the demanding work ethic. The athletic agenda to combat the forces her ancestors did. The endless studying to "know thy enemy as you know thyself". The fact that she had been raised for a purpose dawned on her as if the sun's rays were inescapable brick walls. But, unlike most who would feel "betrayed" or "heartbroken their fate wasn't theirs", Vanessa just smiled and smiled. Because her calling.
Kicked. Major. Ass.
Though, this was all training. The field experience didn't kick in until her first year of highschool and up, which was spent in Virginia. Instead of a boarding school and orphanage, she was put into the charge of a mentor, a sort of parental guardian. He was a strange, but nice man with a loving wife and two kids...a normal enough family for one made up (or half mad up of) monster hunters. Reverend Smith, or Rev as she called him, was a good teacher when it came to firearms and was such a nice man...but the loudness was enough to scare the teen to death. Equipped with a few antiques, she went into Inferis as well as you'd expect. She was terrified. Demons all around her, though the Rev was keeping them at bay, Vanessa was scared out of her wits...then she remembered the stories that the Helsings had. And she be damned if she go down as the Cowardly Helsing. She tightened her belt, loaded her pistol and fired over and over at the demonly beings...they lived, but was very ineffective. Upon actual acceptance into the Order, she chose a more defesive sect, the Crusaders. There, her knowledge and expertise would be of better use. Her Augment was a gift from the Order, giving her a sight that could mark any target or track any target.
With hard study and continuous research and field experience since then, she became the youngest exorcist on record thanks to her extensive work banishing demons in a small french village named Cheder. After that, she noticed that even with advanced technology, her ancestors knew how to take care of a little demon infestation. "No school like the old school". Her archery expertise came in handy during many missions upon the receiving of her collapsible recurve bow and...as Great Great Grandpa Abraham used to say "A little silver can go a looooooooooong way".
