PERSONAL DETAILS
DESCRIPTION:
Blue-green hair, athletic build, piercing eyes of a hawk, and a thing for bandannas. Cael Gladius doesn't look like your typical martial arts student living in New York, but appearances can be deceiving. His clothing usually consists of traditional chinese and japanese wardrobes, as well as the clothing he designs himself, usually in black, white, and green color schemes. His skin is slightly tanned from his outdoor training in the warmer months, which adds to the bandit-like appearance he unknowingly pulls off.
Cael isn't much for talking, usually rather quiet and never a conversation starter. The sort of permanent glare that he puts on at most times coupled with the previous fact gives him quite the serious appearance. When traveling, he usually takes a slow pace, only using his speed when in a fight or training. Some could say that this gives those who fear him thoughts of serial killers from the movies such as Michael Meyers or Jason Voorhees. Cael usually doesn't even realize this, leaving him quite clueless when people bring it up.
PERSONALITY:
Ever since Cael was a young boy he had faith in the heavens, knowing that there was a righteous path to follow. Growing into adulthood, now using his past teachings to make himself a formidable Demon Hunter, the young man still has a ways to go before he can say he's completely grown into his maturity. Although, yes, he does have the heart of a prankster and joker, with a hint of deadpan, he is still a rather pure soul. He also has a soft spot for kids, willing to protect them and put their lives before his own.
Some could say that Cael has a rather obsessive personality, training with three different master swordsmen in a span of eight years. This life of nonstop study and physical conditioning has left him rather disassociated from modern society. Not to say the guy can't carry on a conversation, even though he'd rather not have to at most times, because he can. He simply doesn't know the modern style or slang very well. The only sense of fashion he's ever received is the slight flare he caught from his Latino master, usually showing itself in his wearing of bright, warm colors in the spring and summer.
Warning: Don't attempt, at any point, to steal, damage, destroy, disrespect, or, hell, even mention his bandannas when he has one on. Cael wears them because they remind him of his father, so obviously this would have its own rage trigger behind it somewhere. Compliments to them, however, are always graciously accepted.
HISTORY:
- The Past:
Roman Cael Gladius IV was born in Manhattan, New York at 3:01 AM on October 1st of 1988, to, father, Roman Gladius III and, mother, Martha Black Gladius. His birth was complicated, firstly his parents getting caught in traffic before finally making it to the emergency room, and then the news that his umbilical cord had gotten caught around his throat. The couple worried deeply for their second child, having lost the first previously during Martha's first pregnancy to a fall. Having to resort to a caesarean section, the two of them were immensely relieved when the baby boy with his father's eyes came out perfectly fine.
His father's eyes. The same ones he had to look into after every mistake he made growing up. The stern gaze of a man who wanted the world for his family, but had been disappointed by his child's actions. 'Cael From Hell' was one of the many pet names the man had given him, so it's easy to understand how much mischief and trouble the child found himself in. Stealing candy from convenient stores, getting into fights at school, everything you could imagine a child between the ages of five and twelve doing and getting scolded for, well, Cael certainly did it all.
The kid's act never let up for the longest time. It wasn't until he was staring into his father's coffin that there seemed to be a deep change in the boy a once great man had given his name to. Roman Gladius III died when his son was nearing the age of fifteen, leaving him and his mother to a larger sum of money than either of them could begin to imagine how he'd come into before passing. Not only that, but Cael had felt something strange, like a burning feeling that wanted to creep out of his body. It wasn't until the funeral that he received an answer for it besides, "Your body is going through changes."
An old man approached Cael next to the elder Gladius' coffin. The elderly Japanese fellow didn't speak a word to him, but the teenager knew there was something waiting there next to him. Answers. So many things that he wanted to know now, and they were presenting themselves to him. All he had to do was follow the stranger. Once the burial was over the next day, that same man came to his side, and the two of them were left to look at a tombstone instead of a wooden box, he asked that man everything. He didn't receive an answer from him until he was on his knees at the grave, pounding at the fresh dirt with his fists, tears streaming down his face.
"Your father was in a line of work that none should ever wish to undertake. Demon Hunters, while powerful, eventually learn the meaning of burden."
Though it was the first time Cael had heard the term, he knew almost instantly what the man meant when he referred to Demon Hunters. Those business trips his father took, the scars that would show up on his arms, they were all from fighting a battle that had been going on since before both their births. Long before even Roman Cael Gladius I was born. These thoughts of a secret life his old man had been living, behind both him and his mother, caused the small spark he felt inside of himself to become a roaring flame. The world around him began to shift, and soon both he and the old man were in an entirely different realm. Cael's stomach turned slightly, ashen waste and the smell of brimstone filled the air. It was there, upon his father's grave, that the boy became a man; and it was there that he summoned the sword he would name "Honō no hajimari".
- Beginning of the Flame:
Cael trained under the mysterious old man, leaving behind his mother and twin siblings to move to Canada, for three years after that day. Gin Takizawa taught him to use the sword that erupted from his wrist as well as to speak the Japanese language, but, in those days of training, the young man yearned for so much more. As the final weeks of his training passed, inching closer and closer to the day that his sensei would relieve him of his training and title him a true master of the sword arts, though his mind remained clear he was so sure that there was more to be learned.
Before he left the Canadian mountains where Gin's training grounds were built, he asked the old man of these thoughts he still had. With a smirk he only told Cael, "Just as your father, you too have found the true path." At first confused further, when the swordsman found himself back in New York, yet another stranger presented himself. This one wasn't nearly as subtle an encounter, however.
At the age of eighteen, Cael Gladius clashed blades with a man known as Halcón Matiz. There was nothing passionate to the sword in this man's eyes, but he moved with such grace and precision that no other could defeat him. The newly titled master was dropped to the streets after putting up his best fight, kicked to the side as if he were still a pupil. The Hispanic challenger managed a hearty chuckled as he was asked why he showed no love for his art.
"It is because there is no love in war."
These words caused the younger swordsman to nearly rethink everything he'd been taught by his former master. Could a man wield a blade with no goal in mind but to cleave apart his enemies? Gin had told him such paths were reckless, but inspiration once again struck within Cael's mind. What if this was how he would mold himself into being a true master of the sword? What if this man, Matiz, could teach him not only a new form to wield his weapon in, but also an entirely new way to experience wielding it?
It took the young man two weeks after his brutal beating to track down the hawk-eyed man who had humiliated him, but he eventually found the Spanish speaking swordsman in a bar. Nearly being thrown out by security because he had no identification, not being old enough to enter anyway, Cael managed to break from the guards' hands and into those of the man he would call his second master.
Matiz agreed to train him; the man was growing old in his travels, he needed a protege to pass on his technique to. He needed someone like Cael to ensure his legacy was not stamped out in time. The two of them shared a drink that night, toasting to their new companionship as well as the last night they would look upon each other as mere men. From the next day forward the senior would be referred to as "Maestro Matiz", and he would call his junior "hijo".
In a way, Cael learned what it meant to be a son in the two years he spent with Matiz. He was given chores daily, sparred with in the afternoon, and every night before bed he was sure to say his prayers. Not because he should, not because he could, but because he was not guaranteed every moment he desired on this planet. As weeks passed he found himself learning to wield Honō no hajimari in a new way, just as Maestro Matiz did, backwards and with intent to slice the throat. Though some time passed under the man's tutelage, Cael soon found that his hardest challenge had yet to be presented before him.
One day, riding on the back of a truck with Matiz, the two found themselves in the deserts of Texas. This had been planned from the beginning by the master, but Cael had no idea what they could be doing in such a harsh environment. It was then the elder told hijo that his goal would be to survive here for half a year. He would be given a single canteen of water and a sack of various fruits, but, from there, his fate would be sealed by his own hands.
Cael Gladius found himself in the heat, and, if it didn't cause his inner flame to spread and grow rampant, the stove he walked upon would end up burning him out if he didn't fight. There was only one way he could come out of this as the blazing inferno Matiz saw within him, and this battle would never be like the others he'd been in until now. This was a young man, at the grasp of adulthood, left with no sword that could help him against the most dangerous force he could imagine at that point. Nature itself at its most deadly. The arctic could crush and freeze, but the desert was something else entirely. It was relentless, brutal, and held nothing back. There was no stopping its constant attack on a man's body.
For two months Cael traveled the desert, feeding off what he could find. Water from cacti, snakes, mice, even attempting to eat a scorpion once. After those sixty days in the desert heat, the pupil found what he at first thought to be a mirage, yet, when he approached the hazy vision in the distance, it did not disappear. Beneath a plateau was a small lake; an oasis for him to build his base of operations for the remaining four months of this test. Nearly broken, malnourished, in pain, the successor of the Gladius line found his means to make the new legacy he had found become his own. He would survive here. In this barren wasteland in Texas, somewhere in the center of a place where only death could possibly reside, a young man found hope once more.
Finding a new sense of comfort, 120 days passed in Cael's new home. He hunted, made use of what he could find among the rocks and sand, and when the time came he opened the door of his encampment a new man. Looking to the sky, a strong grin spread across his dried lips as he saw a helicopter coming his way. Waving it down, the face of a rescued civilian turned into the smirk of a student who had done his master well. In the passenger seat of the cockpit was Halcón Matiz, wide-brimmed fedora tilted barely over his piercing eyes.
Three years passed, and now we arrive at the present day. Cael Gladius is still searching for another master that could possibly teach him more than he has already learned from two men. Now moved to Rome, he has learned the Italian language and basked in his family's heritage. At night some say they see a bandanna wearing man who cuts down criminals with his blade, but most simply shrug it off as hearsay or urban legend. There's two men out there who could tell you the true story behind such rumors, but they're on a completely different continent.
Roman Cael Gladius IV. Swordsman. Master. Pupil. Son.
- The Second Spark:
Spending New Years with his old friend, Lazarus, Cael found a short time of peace with the boy's company. A very short time. The two of them, after they left the bar they counted down to 2012 in, made a quick stop at a store for a pack of smokes. After this, the younger of the two making an obnoxious joke regarding a certain eye-patched clerk, they were pursued by a man who the swordsman had thrown out of the bar, as well as two of the drunk's friends. The three fools were quickly dispatched, however, and the rest of the night... Well, let's just say having a hangover wasn't worth waking up with a lampshade on his head.
A little more than two weeks of training later, Cael caught a bit of a snag in his path after encountering a demon warrior known as Gaius. The two of them, just beginning their battle within the Colosseum, were hastily brought to a painful reality after being stopped by the great Belial. His first encounter with an archdemon, Cael still refused to show fear, even after being slung into the stands by the behemoth's blade. Because of this, his want for battle interesting the archdemon, the samurai was spared. However, he would be forced to participate in a tournament being held within the arena in the coming month. His heart heavier, literally due to a mercury ring being placed within him, Cael left to lick his wounds and train harder than he had been.
Two days later, Cael arrived by plane in London. His first master's list of tears helped greatly, considering he would need to face new foes in order to better himself in his skills. On his arrival, after going to a small deli, Cael met a blonde haired man named Alex Stone. Also a Demon Hunter, Alex wasn't quite as knowledgeable in the workings of Inferis as the swordsman, so the green haired man offered to take him along on a hunt to show him the ropes, so to speak. Almost immediately the two of them left for Inferis.
A ferocious battle with a large group of Nosferatu ensued after the blonde demonstrated his Evocation rather loudly. The two failed the majority of them, tightening their new bond at the same time. Though the rest of them could have been taken down, Cael saw no need to remain within the same spot for long. The two of them fell back, not wanting any larger demons to find them, before parting ways. On this day a new spark arose within the samurai's soul, allowing him to reach the next tier of his bloodline's gift. With a new blade of lightning (as well as the ability to move faster than the human eye for short distances) in his arsenal, Cael now moves on to his next goal:
Returning home and facing his greatest demons.
